Oil and Gas Will Be Explored in Cappadocia; A company that is one of Turkey’s important brands in the field of luxury tourism and is known for a famous hotel it owns in Cappadocia, announced that it will explore for oil and natural gas in Avanos, Nevşehir.

The company, which decided in December that ‘EIA is not required’ to open a drilling well to search for oil in approximately 16 thousand square meters of its licensed area of 31 thousand hectares, made a new application and stated that it wanted to increase the exploration area to 84 thousand square meters. While it is stated in the EIA file that the area where the company wants to drill a borehole has the status of ‘agricultural land’, the area in question is not included in the ‘world heritage list’ defined by international agreements, is not a national park, nature park or pasture, and does not contain any protected species within the scope of the Bern Convention. emphasized.

Company Applied for Expansion

The company first made an EIA application to open an oil exploration well on 15 thousand 710 square meters of its licensed area of 30 thousand 153 hectares, and it was decided that ‘EIA is not required’ on December 11, 2023. This time, the company applied for ‘expansion’ for the 7 million 200 thousand TL project, just 3 months after the decision. The ‘oil exploration expansion application’ made on March 20 was made to increase the area where drilling wells would be drilled to search for oil to 84 thousand square meters.

In the EIA file, which states that the oil exploration project covers the Avanos, Hacıbektaş and Gülşehir districts of Nevşehir, it is stated that “With the studies to be carried out, reserve determination and production suitability will be investigated, and then it will be decided whether production will be carried out in this area or areas.” “It is planned to conduct exploration drilling in the project area and go down to a depth of approximately 1,200 meters.”

The company will also open new wells according to the exploration results.

How Will the Search be Carried Out?

In the company’s EIA file, it is stated that blasting will be done with a low amount of explosives at depths of 630 meters and 1,050 meters from the head of the well, and said: “By detonating in two separate zones, holes will be opened on the surface of the steel pipe and it will be tested whether there will be oil or natural gas flow.

Since the blasting process is carried out underground with a low amount of explosives, noise, gas, etc. are produced in and around the well mouth. No emissions will occur. “The perforation operation is carried out 1-1.5 kilometers underground in a casing pipe with a cemented back, and there is no shaking, rock flying or similar effects as in other mining activities.”
